Exciting news!!!! Blackberries are the top of all ‘super fruits’, the dark blue colour ensures that they have one of the highest antioxidant levels of all fruits. As a child I would go foraging and I have such fond memories of coming home so proud with my basket of black beauties, purple stained fingers and clothes eager for my mother to prepare blackberry and apple crumble, such a delicious treat. Here in Umbria, I often go out walking with my husband in the morning, we go early as it feels like the rest of the village are still sleeping and we have the whole countryside to ourselves. One morning we decided to venture form our usual route; it was just past the lake where we stumbled upon hedgerows and hedgerows of blackberries (brambleberries). Nothing has really changed as I still came home covered in purple stains!
Blackberry - Botanical name: Rubus fruticosus.
In old English called ‘bramble’ or brymbyl and ‘brombeere’ in German.
The blackberry is an acncient fruit prescribed by the ancient Greeks for gout.
The ancient Anglo-Saxons baked brambleberries into primitive pies to celebrate the first fruit feast of Lughnasadh at the beginning of August.
Blackberries are rich in bioflavonoids and Vitamin C and E but other nutritional benefits include a very low sodium count and a source of soluble fiber.
They contain only 52 kcal to 100gm.
7 Easy Ways to Use Them
Use to make a refreshing blackberry and mint water, simply add a hand fall of blackberries and mint leaves to a pitcher of water and ice, then stir to infuse the flavours.
Soak in pinot noir and 2tsp sugar, bake brie and top with the blackberries, enjoy with slices of baguette.
Use to make a refreshing salad, sprinkle over baby spinach leaves, chopped avocado and pomegranate, dress with lemon vinaigrette.
Use to make vegetarian and gluten free frozen yogurt.
Use to make a simple salad, watermelon cubes, blackberries, chopped mint and lime juice.
Use the leaves to make a cup of tea or as an enhanced therapeutic drink. Not everyone will like the bitter flavour, so to mask the taste add honey.
Use to make blackberry salsa
1 pint fresh blackberries, chopped
½ red onion, finely chopped
½ jalapeno or green chili, finely chopped
½ cup chives, chopped
1 lime, juiced
Salt and pepper
Add all ingredients to a bowl and mix together gently.
